1949 Volkswagen Hebmuller Monster!

Album: 1949 Volkswagen Hebmuller Monster!

Matching Numbers Body & Chassis! Some Readers have missed this and want to clarify.

The ’49 Hebmuller owned and toured the USA, Canada and Europe since 1992.

Here are the words from the man who created the history on one of the coolest VW's in the world!

I first saw the Heb as a Yukon Yellow 2 seat convertible displayed at
a Volkswagen of America vintage show around 1970 in NJ. The ‘49 was
owned by the sales manager for a VW dealership in Virginia. The sight
of that VW became a 22 year conquest for me as I had to have it. For
years I chased the car and when it sold during the mid 80’s, I had 3
children in college and a start up business demanding every dollar I
could spare. A fellow hobbyist living 25 miles from me bought it and
basically sat on it until 1992 when I finally bought it.

Over the years I had learned a lot about the history of this Heb from
hobbyists and Peter Banholzer the VW sales Manager that had owned it
for years. Apparently it had been separated from the original chassis
during 1967 in a shop in western PA for restoration. A potential owner
wanting a funky old VW persuaded the shop owner to drop the body on a
’61 chassis with a 1500 Type II engine and updated it to ’67 specs.
Mr. Banholzer bought it shortly after and finished the work, painting
it a ’67 VW color of Yukon Yellow.

When I bought the Heb in March of ’92, I made an immediate call to the
shop in Pennsylvania to retrieve the chassis, front I beam and
transaxle. For the next year the ’49 underwent an extensive
restoration transforming it to a burgundy and ivory Hebmuller powered
by a correct 25hp engine with the original full crash box transaxle,
albeit with hydraulic rather than mechanical brakes. I drove the ’49
extensively throughout the Northeast for the next 5 years then
completely dismantled it for a full restoration. Emerging from a
complete restoration at C.B. Restorations in MA.
The Heb and I started logging some serious miles. First, it was a run from NH to MI for the annual VVWCA show at VW headquarters in Auburn Hills. This trip sparked an idea I had been working on for a number of years to found a
club for the drivers of 1957 or older VWs powered by 36hp or less that
could qualify for annual membership after driving 1,500 miles a year.
(Many of the really good Vintage VWs were becoming trailer queens and
I detested the thought). Our Der Kafer Fahrer Group (DKF) started
making some incredible journeys. NH to CA, and back, in the Heb while
powered by 25 hp was one of my first. From 1992- 2004, the Heb and I
logged 57,000 miles in club tours.

Examples include: The Return to the Fatherland Tour… 1999 (Long Beach, CA to Wolfsburg, Germany with 9 early VWs from 1943-1955 celebrating 50 years of Volkswagen in America). Then it was three History Channel Great Races from 2000-2002 (coast to coast 4,000 mile time-and-speed antique car rallys in the only VW to ever compete in the 120 car 14 day run). After our first Great Race it became very apparent that 25 hp with a full crash box
was not a winning formula for coast to coast rallying.

For 2001 I sourced a bolt-in complete drive train from a 1953 Pre A Porsche 1500S Super Coupe, which was VW based and actually a ’49 VW case. The
transaxle was also VW sourced and was Porsches first fully synchromesh
transmission. The Heb was now powered by a 1,500CC dual carb engine
of 75hp with a full synchromesh transaxle. Also at this time I
converted to Porsche aluminum finned B brakes as I felt that a car
that could GO should also STOP! … and the Heb became very competitive.
The Porsche drive train had sparked an interest in me for 356 Porsches
and the next antique that followed me home was a 356A Convertible D.
I’ve been playing very seriously with the 356s since 2002 and my early
VWs have spent a lot of time in storage on their lifts.

Some details on the the Hebmuller:

1949 Volkswagen Hebmuller-Kabriolet 2-Sitzer Model 14A
(2 seat convertible coupe)
Production series #350 (of 696)
The Hebmuller production tag in the spare tire well is still intact …
a handful of the surviving 14A cars can claim that.
Serial # 1-0-132 264 Engine #
-1-0-163165 (25 hp 1131cc engine)

October 1949

original Hebmuller pattern.

Added accessories as required for the Great Race: Directional lights
front and rear mounted in VW Hella back up light housings and bumper
bracket mounted including the column mounted directional switch. (In
addition to the dash board operated and correct front quarter
semaphores).
This Hebmuller could be sold with either the original (25hp) drive
train or the 1953 Pre A Porsche 1500S drive train… or both.

The Hebmuller has a bit of earned patina from the miles and years
of pure enjoyment. The history and earned patina in my eyes adds to the great opportunity to own one of the most pinnacle VW's in the world. It draws a huge crowd in almost any old car setting and I would not hesitate to
drive it coast to coast again.

1951 Volkswagen Ragtop 11G One of the best in the world!

Album: 1951 Volkswagen Ragtop 11G One of the best in the world!

1951 Volkswagen Deluxe Sunroof

Model # 11G

Chassis & Body # 1-0-291675, Engine # 1-0-352683

Color L31 Tauben (Dove) Blue

This 1951 Volkswagen was manufactured on October 8,1951 and shipped to Hoffman

(Messrs. VW Distributing, New York) October 10,1951.

That fall “Lindy” Hansen of Bedford, Massachusetts, (a U.S, Army WWII veteran who had served with the occupation forces in Germany following the Allied victory) was visiting with his back door neighbor, a German Optical Engineer, recently employed by a new company named Polaroid. His neighbor expressed an interest in buying a Volkswagen. Lindy, with knowledge of the German VW, had heard that they were being sold in New York City and contacted Hoffman. He worked out the purchase with his neighbor and took a train to New York City to bring back a Volkswagen. This 1951 Deluxe Sunroof was the first VW sold by Tage “ Lindy” Hansen” who shortly after was named the New England Distributor for Volkswagen in New England (excluding CT.) under the name of Hansen-MacPhee.

The German engineer drove the 1951 VW until 1961 when he decided that the 25hp engine was not suitable for the on ramps of the new four-lane beltway around Boston. After ten years and 44,000 miles he traded it for a 1961 Volkswagen Sunroof with the, then new, 40 hp engine. Lindy ran the ’51 through his body shop for a quick paint job and reupholstered the complete car to typical used car standards. The car then was retired to the showroom of his VW dealership in Brookline, MA.

In 1967 the Volkswagen Distributorships were bought back by Volkswagen and the ’51 ended up in a closed Porsche dealership in Bedford, MA where it sat all alone in a closed show room until 1975.

I had visited the ’51 many times between 1971-75 to determine the correct details for the restoration of a 1950 Hoffmann Sunroof I then owned. In November of 1975 I was able to buy the Dove Blue ’51 from Lindy and brought it home with a promise that I would never sell it to Volkswagen of America (bitterness over the loss of the VW Distributorship). From 1975 until 1991 the ’51 was used as a spring, summer and fall back-up family transport vehicle for soccer games, foliage runs and trips to the beach… with the original 25 hp engine and crash box. During this same period the VVWCA had taken root and the VW was at nearly every VW show within 200 miles of southern New Hampshire for years.

By 1991 the old ‘51 was beginning to look a bit tired and a major restoration was initiated. Every removable piece was tagged and bagged while a, much longer than expected, nut and bolt restoration began. In 1997 the completely detailed chassis with the rebuilt original the drive train was rolled back under the completed body at C.B. Restorations of Massachusetts. In the spring of 1997 I reattached the New Hampshire antique license plate that “Old Blue” had displayed since 1976… VW. The ’51 was shown twice during the next year, and tucked away in dry storage for the next 12 years on the top level of a four post lift while I toured the United States, Canada and Europe with my ’49 Hebmuller and others from my early Volkswagen collection.

This 1951 Deluxe is a completely restored original 11G Sunroof that was never rusted. Every numbered component is the original from the day it was built in Wolfsburg Germany. Absolutely no expense was spared nor shortcuts taken during the painfully slow six year restoration. If there is a more finely detailed and technically correct 1951 Deluxe Sunroof in the world, I’ve not seen or heard of it.

Album: 1950 Split Window Sunroof Beetle, Superb! Ask!

1950 Split Window Sunroof Beetle, Superb!
These are the most recent additions to this already over the top 1950 Split Window Sunroof Beetle.
*Rear bumper Re Chromed

This L70 Medium Brown 1950 is potentially the nicest Split Window Sunroof Beetle in North America. The attention to detail throughout is phenomenal and the quality of the restoration is top notch. It is correct, matching numbers, and visually extremely nice.

There is a long list of features and accessories to this car that include matching numbers car with correct 25hp engine, full crash non-synchro transaxle, original pan, original 16" wheels with Dunlop bias plies, mint restored ribbed semaphores, correct ribbed doors with notched large logo SEKURIT glass, popes nose engine lid, flat H apron, correct split hood and fenders all around, large mouth gas tank with mint original cap, mint restored Telefunken radio, 100KM badge, Bambus parcel tray, ZAR tag, German porcelain bud vase, Telefunken center mount antenna, Bosch driving/fog lights with peaked lenses, rare accessory brakelights, correct ribbed aluminum trim, early Split running boards, rare glove box doors, telescoping ashtray, cigar lighter, red striped shift knob, accessory ebrake grip, rear bolster pillows, Bosch logoed battery with correct cover and spring setup, mint original round shaft wiper assemblies, correct aluminum hood emblem and handle, locking L decklid handle, mint grooved bumpers, European symmetrically fluted headlights, beautifully restored rear view mirror assembly, early Golde ribbed sunroof handle, I could literally carry on all day long.

The body is in excellent shape, extremely clean, straight, dry, and sterile. The L70 Medium Brown paint is very well done and displays beautifully. This car left Wolfsburg as a hardtop and had a real Split Window Sunroof expertly sectioned into it many years back. It was done so well that you would likely never be able to detect it. All of the doors, fenders, hood, and aprons are correct to the car. Ribbed doors, split hood, real Pope's nose decklid, round horn grill front fenders, dimpled rear Split fenders, flat rear H apron with no exhaust cutouts, the antenna boss above the windshield, etc. The pan is the original 1950 pan and is beautiful as you can see from the pics. The mint restored orange lensed ribbed semaphores work beautifully and pop up immediately. Both of the correct grooved bumpers with bumperettes are in perfect shape as well. Everywhere you look this Split Ragtop is just spectacular.

The interior is the nicest we've ever seen in a Split Beetle. All of the materials are correct from the upholstery, mohair headliner, German square weave carpet, rear seat bolster pillows, rear luggage compartment strips, armrest, rear view mirror assembly, even the battery area is as factory! There are accessories wherever you look inside including the Telefunken radio, telescoping ashtray, cigar lighter, St. Christopher 100KM badge, Bambus parcel shelf, ZAR plate, high beam switch pad, the red-lined mushroom shift knob, and the accessory ebrake grip. The interior is as beautiful and sterile as the day it left the factory 58 years ago.

Mechanically this Split is matching numbers with the original 1950 "1-" 25hp engine, the correct smooth cased full crash/non-synchromesh transaxle, stock brakes, original 16" rims with fresh Dunlop bias plies and painted logo chromed hubcaps. Of course it is still 6 volts and due to it having a brand new and correct wiring harness all of the lights light up super brightly. It starts right up and runs excellent.

This is an opportunity to get one of the nicest and most correct Split Window Sunroof Beetles in North America. This beauty looks like it drove right out of a 1950 Volkswagen Beetle sales brochure!

1967 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible 67K Original Miles!

Album: 1967 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible 67K Original Miles!

1967 Volkswagen Karmann Convertible

Model # 151, Serial # 157418357, Engine # H0521426

L 639 Zenith Blue

This 1967 Convertible was purchased at Seacoast Motors (VW) in Portsmouth, NH during the summer of 1967. It was bought as a daughter’s University of New Hampshire college graduation present. The new graduate moved to Burlington Vermont as a teacher and kept this Zenith Blue VW for 27 years. It was her spring, summer and fall transportation under blue skies. Her winter car was a Jeep CJ, saving the ’67 from 27 northern Vermont winters and rust. In the spring of 1994 she traded her convertible with 41,000+ miles for a new Volkswagen in Burlington, VT.

Shortly after, a real estate broker purchased the VW as a summer car. He added another 3,000 miles to the convertible through the summer of 1994 and brought it to the September VW show in Johnson, VT. Parking the car on the field, he placed a For Sale sign on the rear quarter window and wandered off to survey his competition.

In judging the convertible class, I had eliminated a number of convertibles and was trying to pick the top three for scrutinizing, when I spotted this ’67 which hadn’t been washed or vacuumed in months. I located the owner whom I quickly learned had boxed himself in on a divorce agreement. He apparently owed his ex wife a settlement within 4 days based on his prior year’s tax return. He was looking for cash, which he thought would magically appear on a Sunday parade field in Northern Vermont. Not carrying a massive wad of cash, I offered his asking price, which was turned down. So we exchanged cards. Reaching home, the answering machine was beeping with “ Bring the cash NOW” messages. Two days later I drove the nicest driving Volkswagen I have ever owned two hundred miles back to New Hampshire without a hiccup.

A great number of Volkswagen enthusiasts consider the 1967 to be the high water mark for Volkswagen. It was the last year for the “towel bar” bumpers, first for 12 Volts as standard and the first year of the 53 hp 1500 cc engine. A ’67 that has been taken apart with parts missing can be a challenge to restore as there is a very long list of one-year-only parts for this model year. This is a complete and correct ’67.

Since purchasing this Convertible in 1994 it has been given a repaint (1995) in the original L639 Zenith Blue. The carpet was replaced with a new set of German Square weave. Five Firestone 5.60X 15 narrow white walls were installed on the original rims. Four original German hubcaps were found and installed. The original engine was completely rebuilt by John Kaiser of Hyde park, VT with NOS German parts. The heater boxes were replaced and an NOS Abarth muffler was installed. New German bumpers are in place.

The upholstery and headliner are original with very minimal wear. The trunk compartment is exceptionally original with the complete toolkit and jack. It has the Saphire radio from new. A set of four black and blue sisal mats have been installed.

The owners manual with customer Identification card and service stamps through 39,000 miles are included.

This 1967 VW is an absolute pleasure to drive and has seen roughly 20,000 miles of foliage touring, ice cream runs and just good drives with fellow enthusiasts over the past fifteen years. It is not a “ Trailer Queen” awaiting white glove removal from an enclosed trailer for show judging. It is a great old Volkswagen deserving much better than a home on a four post lift while dreaming of endless country roads beyond the horizon.

1956 Volkswagen Kabriolet Custom Monster!

Album: 1956 Volkswagen Kabriolet Custom Monster!

This car and the word conservative do not belong in the same sentence. The builder pushed the limits of modern day building into the Volkswagen community when it comes to custom and quality. The final price tag of this build hit the 100K plus checkbook. Regardless of what it took to build the car it will be the new owners chance to save not only 1000's of hours of work and even more thousands in the pocket book. Best of all this car showcases a racing engine detuned to about 300 horsepower for street use. This engine has never been subjected to the drag strip but would give any car on the strip a run for its money. This car is set up to drive easily as a weekend driver and is not at all fussy like a race car, even though it is built like one.

Very close to being a 100 point car in quality. One of the finest custom Volkswagen Cabriolets you have ever seen if not the finest. Built by Volkswagen specialist Benjamin Strong to exacting standards in the Euro-Techno Style. Less than 50 miles on the car since full custom build. This car has been mostly trailered. Absolutely everything on the car has been addressed, taken apart, renewed, refinished, replaced or whatever it might take to make this car as good as it can possibly be. Nothing has been down to second best standards only the best. The chassis is completely built/rebuilt as if new. The body has been refitted, restored, and refinished including all fasteners, attachments, and gaskets. Everything in the Engine and drive train is new and high-tech, including the fuel delivery system, hydraulic clutch, wheel bearings and suspension. Nothing in the engine and drivetrain is less than state-of-the-art including computer controlled fuel injection/ignition that can be tuned as you drive to your performance curves by cell phone from the factory in California. Nothing has been left untouched. Too much money has been invested LOL not including the Owner's labor of love. At some point you got to laugh. When we grow older our toys become bigger and better.

Entire pan soda blasted and dipped. The pan was stripped, rebuilt, strengthened, gusseted, and refinished. The serial numbers on the body and pan match. The pan and chassis are fully powder coated to show-quality satin finish.

Entire body soda blasted and dipped. All body parts are the correct parts for the year. All fasteners stainless steel button head or other appropriate stainless steel fasteners. The body has been sectioned and realigned to original specifications with new rails and then concours refinished. The inside of the fender wells and all other under-car areas are show-quality finished and painted to the same degree of finish as the exterior. Approximately 600 hours of bodywork, painting, and making of custom sheet metal parts. Original H-Pattern apron has been discreetly custom fitted to the Turbo System with the smoother pre 55 look. Albert reproduction mirrors, Original Wolfsburg Crest and Karmann badge. The builder decided to use the rare 55 only rear California spec taillights. The car has the Petri 3 spoke steering wheel with the Golden Lady horn button. The car was fitted with a flawless clear needle Kilometer Speedometer.

The original deck lid and bonnet seals and channel were removed, body-smoothed, rebuilt and sealed to eliminate the possibility of rusting. Entire interior of car has Dynamat sound deadening material - inside doors, quarter panels, floors, rear deck, front and rear firewalls.

Rare opportunity to be able to buy the best. This is one of the nicest original ghia's I have seen in person in years. Below is the history of the car along with the originality that is never seen. This is the closest you will come to experiencing time travel. When sitting in the car it feels as if you are at the dealership back in 1967 going for a test drive. The interior is spot on perfect. Please read below and enjoy the pictures at my website at www.colomemotors.com

This 12,000 Mile original black coupe was purchased in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania during October of 1967. The buyer’s wife had always admired the Karmann Ghia, yet she was a large woman and unable to get behind the steering wheel to drive. Her husband’s intent in buying the car was to entice her into losing significant weight to enjoy her new VW. Unfortunately the plan didn’t work out and the coupe languished in their garage for years. After the husband died his widow kept the car registered in the garage and available for their son (a Cambridge, MA college professor) to drive on his visits to PA. From 1967 until 1990 the coupe rolled just over 7,000 miles from new. In 1989 the aging widow decided to give her grandson and fiancé the Karmann Ghia as a wedding present. The young couple took exception to the thoughtless gift and did not care for the car. They wanted to inherit the vacation home. The professor was angered by their lack of appreciation and took the car back. He advertised it for sale shortly after and it joined the New Hampshire VW collection a week later.

The wood grain dash paneling on the glove box door had cracked with a piece missing and was replaced with an available reproduction piece. Four of the original 5.60X15 Continental white walls were still on the car until this past summer. They were replaced with a new set of Firestone 5.60X15whitewalls from Coker Tire. (The fifth original Continental tire was chewed through by a porcupine while sitting outdoors in readiness for a fall foliage tour of New England in 1996). The original long block was changed under warranty during the first year, as the bearing saddles failed. (This weakness was not uncommon for a number of the early 1500 engines). The replacement block was not re stamped with a serial number. The paint is 90% original. The carpeting, upholstery, glass, chrome and running gear is as it came from the factory. The black coupe has a bit of patina, yet is one of the most original VW I’ve ever seen.

In 1995 the Franklin Mint of Pennsylvania initiated a search for the most original Karmann Ghia Coupe in the United States. This 1967 Coupe was selected. It was trailered to Franklin Center, PA for a five day photo shoot of ten thousand pictures. A Certificate of Authenticity from the Franklin Mint and one of the first production 1/24th scale models is included with the sale of this Karmann Ghia.

This car has rolled less than 5,000 miles since taking up residence in New Hampshire. Nearly all of the miles were added by Volkswagen hobby friends from the United States and Europe on annual three day Fall Foliage Tours of northern New England. It has spent the rest of its time the slumbering on a four-post lift among older VW relatives…dreaming of road trips.

If original is your dream, You’ll spend years finding a more original 1967 Karmann Ghia anywhere !
